Foundation for Research & Technology Hellas (FORTH), Greece

FORTH

The largest research centre in Greece, it consists of 8 institutes that are active over a very broad range of activities. One of those is the Institute of Electronic Structure and Laser that focuses on physics and lightmatter interaction. Two groups are involved in this project. The Microelectronics research group (MRG) that is a unique facility in Greece focusing on compound semiconductor manufacturing and emerging nanotechnologies. MRG has an extensive nano-fabrication facility and is currently establishing a pilot line for Rx/Tx front end based on GaN technology for Radar applications. The second group is the Polymer Electronics Laboratory of the Hybrid Nanostructures Group, which focuses on the study of the processing-structure-function relationships of electrically active polymers for energy harvesting and bioelectronic applications. In this project FORTH will work on two aspects: i) the functionalization of (relaxor) ferroelectric polymers and the characterization of their structural and functional properties which are relevant for their incorporation in pyroelectric generators and electrocaloric coolers. FORTH expects to exploit the new knowledge that will be derived by THERMOCOOL in consolidating current expertise in ferroelectric polymers and expanding it into modules fabrication. Thus, the Polymer Electronics Laboratory will gain access to higher TRL RIA projects. ii) Based on the semiconductor manufacturing technology, a thermal management solution will be realized to showcase the potential of the developed systems in the microelectronics arena. FORTH will exploit the results to expand their portfolio of offered services in semiconductor manufacturing and systems offering a heat managed interposer for their existing high-power electronics platform.
