Airborne weather forecast: This market is currently dominated by US companies (Rockwell Collins, Honeywell, Telephonics). Even if it addresses low equipment quantities, it is steadily increasing (in direct relationship with the air traffic evolution) and deals with high value products (therefore leading to high competition among current market’s actors). We can consider the airborne weather forecast radar market size to be around 4000 equipment for the next 10 years to come: THALES forecasts to get 5 to 10% share of this market.

SATCOM: This market follows the same trend as the previous one and we can foresee around 2000 equipment to be supplied to airplane companies for the next 10 years to come. Competitors are US companies (Rockwell Collins, Honeywell, Cobham), but also from Israel (Starling) and other countries. The market is therefore more spread as the previous one (no one has a significant market share). THALES is also there aiming at a 10 % market share.

THALES provides AIRBUS programs with 80% of avionics equipment. Considering only the avionics computers segment, Thales is producing 18000 equipment per year and has 170000 equipment in operation in different airlines. The challenge is to win the next generation of aircraft, which represent a potential of 5K to 10K computers. The financial impact could then reach from several tens of M€ up to 100 M€
